Remember to Recycle this Christmas

Recycle your glass, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, even your tree this year at one of Derry City Council’s recycling facilities, that’s the message the Council are promoting this Christmas.

At this time of year many households find they have more rubbish than usual. Packaging from gifts, decorations, even food seems to increase. So make full use of your blue bin and recycle your cards, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans. Derry City Council can even recycle your Christmas tree at all Household Recycling Centres.

Encouraging everyone to make full use of the recycling facilities this Christmas, Gerry Maclochlainn, the Chairman of Environmental Services said:

“We all have a responsibility to protect and conserve the environment and everyone can do their bit by recycling rubbish rather than throwing everything in their grey bin.

“It takes just a few minutes to separate things like Christmas cards, used wrapping paper, boxes, plastic, aluminium cans and tins from things that can’t be recycled.

“Take advantage of Derry City Council’s Christmas Tree disposal service. Christmas Trees can be left at any of the city’s Household Recycling Centres where they are shredded and used as compost.

“The main message is to reduce the amount of waste you produce, reuse things like plastic bags, plastic containers and glass jars and recycle the waste you produce.”

All homes in the City Council area, have been issued with blue bins which give households the chance to recycle their household waste. Don’t forget there are six recycling centres around the city which are also available for recycling glass bottles and jars, textiles, household batteries, cooking oil and various other items.

People are urged to bring any unwanted gifts to any of the Charity Shops thoughout the Derry City Council area.

The following Household Recycling Centres will be accepting Christmas Trees for recycling following the Christmas period - Brandywell, Glendermott Road, Pennyburn, Eglinton , Claudy and Strathfoyle.
Derry City Council presently provide bottle banks at the following locations:

Sainsburys , Northside Shopping Centre, Tesco Lisnagelvin, Drumahoe Service Station, Council Offices, Student Village Duncreggan Road, Mace-Creggan Road, Caw Park and all Household Recycling Centres.

Opening times at the Council’s Six Amenity Recycling Centres have been set to help the public in the run up and during the festive season.
