Craft Skills on Show at Derry City Council’s Craft Fair

Visitors to this weekend’s ”Crafts in the Walled City” event will be able to see live demonstrations of craft skills as well as being able to purchase the best in Irish traditional and contemporary craft-design.

Sheila O’Brien, Lecturer at the North West Institute of Further and Higher Education (NWIFHE) commented: “The Art and Design students are delighted to be participating in this year’s “Walled City Craft Fair” They will be demonstrating some of the skills they have gained during their art and design courses.”

Derry City Council’s tenth annual craft fair which will take place on the weekend of 20th and 21st of November 2004, right in the heart of the Historic Walled City at the Calgach Centre in Butcher Street. Demonstrations will be taking place between 11.00 – 12.30 and 1.00 - 2.30 on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be an opportunity to view the following activities

  • Pottery – throwing and hand building
  • Feltmaking – scarves and bags
  • Creative Embroidery- using a sewing machine to produce art pieces
  • Preparing plates for printmaking

Thirty-four craft designers from all parts of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have been selected to take part in “Crafts in the Walled City 2004”. The event is organised jointly by Council’s Economic Development Section and North West Marketing. Councillor Helen Quigley, Chairperson of the City Marketing Committee, welcomed the students’ involvement. “It is great to see the next generation of designers being profiled alongside the best of Ireland’s craft producers. The live demonstrations will add colour to what is already a popular annual event.”

“ Crafts in the Walled City 2004” event will open on Saturday 20th, November 2004 and everyone is welcome to attend. Opening hours are as follows – Saturday, 10am-6pm and Sunday, 11am-6pm. Admission is £1 and under 12’s are admitted free of charge.
