Press ReleaseMayor concerned at post office closure proposalsFriday, 15 December 2006The Mayor Cllr Helen Quigley has expressed concern at news that up to 200 post offices across the North could face closure as part of a UK-wide restructuring process announced today. The Mayor said the announcement would have a detrimental impact on the local economy and on the rural community in particular, who are reliant on the post office and the service it provides. Urging participation in the consultation process, the Mayor said it was important every possible step was taken to protect the needs of rural and deprived communities across the North. “The post office is a social outlet for local communities and these proposed closures could be the final nail in the coffin and every effort should be made to reduce the impact it will have on the local community,” she said.
