Press ReleaseMayor Thanks Local Businesses For Supporting Tea DanceThursday, 14th December 2006Older people in the city have enjoyed a series of tea dances in the majestic surroundings of the Guildhall this year thanks to the strong partnership between Derry City Council, Age Concern and local businesses. Many local firms and staff in the area donated goods or took part to make sure each event was a huge success. The Christmas Tea Dance on Tuesday 12th December received support from local supermarkets Sainsbury's, Tescos, Supervalue, Gee's Supermarket, Costcutters, Dunnes Stores and Longs donated sweets, biscuits and prizes for the raffle, while catering company, Two's Company provided sandwiches, mince pies, tea and coffee. And Sunflower Alley donated baskets of flowers, which helped set off the décor. Volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul, Lisneal College, St. Cecilia’s College and St. Mary's school helped serve refreshments and created a friendly, festive atmosphere for everyone who took part. Thanking everyone who contributed, the Mayor, Councillor Helen Quigley said: " I'd like to thank Age Concern along with the staff of the City Council for their assistance in organising Afternooon Tea Dances over the past number of months". They were a great success. " It means a lot to me and everyone who took part that so many local companies and schools also contributed to the afternoon tea dances. " They were organised to create a lovely relaxed atmosphere for our older people. They had a chance to meet up with friends and enjoy a bit of craic while having a cup of tea. There's been plenty of entertainment and everyone had a chance to enjoy a few dances while catching up on all the gossip! " I'm also delighted that so many people took part and I know that they were very appreciated by all older people in the area. I'm sure their popularity will continue in the New Year."
