Press ReleasePiece Perfect Piece14th November 2005The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Lynn Fleming will today, Tuesday 15th November, host the launch of the “Piece” Exhibition in the Playhouse’s Context Gallery. The exhibition, part of the Creative Industries Week within Council, is a pre-cursor to the tenth annual Craft Fair, which this year, will return to the Guildhall from 18th – 20th November. This travelling exhibition has already been showcased in both Down Arts Centre and the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny. The exhibition is a series of 13 diverse interpretations of the word piece, with each of the designer/makers responding to their individual definition of the term. The exhibition includes work wrought in metal, clay, glass, textiles and plastic. Speaking in advance of the launch, Mayor Councillor Lynn Fleming said, “Derry City Council is keen to promote the potential of the Creative Industries Sector as an important contributor to the economic vitality of the City. “As Derry prepares to capitalize on the NITB designation of the Walled City of Derry as a Signature Tourism Project, the Council’s Economic Development Section is facilitating the enhancement of the retail offer through specialty shopping – such as the annual Craft Fair and the Speciality Food Market”. She added, “Aligned to the organization of the Craft Fair, events such as the Piece Exhibition are an important showcase because they can make an enduring contribution to the cultural, economic and social regeneration of Derry”. Sarah Friel, Creative Industries Officer with Derry City Council affirmed that “This event is an important initiative for Derry City Council demonstrating our commitment to the ongoing development of the creative industry sector in the north west. It also provides us with the opportunity to showcase exhibition facilities in the City and allied to the upcoming craft fair, highlights the wealth of creative talent within the island of Ireland”. The exhibition will run from 15th – 22nd November in the Context Gallery at the Playhouse. It is open to the public from 11am – 5.30pm (Tuesday – Saturday).
