New Age Kurling - a first for sports development

Thursday 13th December 2007

A community tournament to promote the sport of curling will arrive with a twist this Autumn as an indoor version of the Olympic Sport becomes part of Derry City Council’s Waterside Community Sports programme.

Hanging up her ice skates for trainers, Waterside Community Sports Development Officer Louise Allen says the new version is perfectly adapted for indoors.

“It’s known as New Age Kurling and already has a growing number of active participants from areas in the Waterside. The community tournament is a chance for everyone to show off their skills and enjoy a sport that is positive for all ages and abilities. It was great to secure some additional funding for equipment and as it is such an inclusive sport in so many ways, we look forward to seeing its popularity grow”.

New Age Kurling is recognized as an inclusive sport as the game can be played by both able-bodied and disabled people of all ages alike and encourages disabled people and able bodied people to play against each other on an equal level. Inclusive Games Training was provided by Disability Sports Northern Ireland for people to deliver the activity and further training is to be provided in the near future.

The tournament on Thursday 13th December will welcome competitors from Irish Street Youth & Community Centre and Tullyally District development group/ Currynierin Community and is supported by the Waterside Community Supports Development Programme. This tournament is a culmination of the internal leagues that have been taking place within local communities since September.

The Waterside Community Sports Development Programme is managed by Derry City Council and funded through the Sport Northern Ireland & Big Lottery Community Sport Fund.
