Passengers urged to prepare for Airport security over Christmas

Wednesday, 13th December 2006

Management at the City of Derry Airport have urged passengers using the facility during the festive period to ensure they pack their luggage appropriately to avoid unnecessary delays at security.

The airport manager, Seamus Devine explained that passengers are urged to place all their belongings in their hold luggage and have it checked in. He said items that must be carried in hand luggage must not be wrapped.

He commented: “This is an exceptionally busy time for the airport and I would urge passengers to do what they can to reduce the risk of long queues and delays at airport security by packing correctly. It is important that passengers pack all their belongings in their hold luggage and limit their hand luggage. They run the risk of getting Christmas presents unwrapped and checked at security if they are wrapped and are included in hand luggage.”

It is also important that passengers take note that they are only required to take one single item of cabin luggage measuring 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Passengers should also be aware of the restrictions that are in place relating to the carrying of liquids, gels etc. and urged to carry all liquids/gels (cosmetics, toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam/gel, aerosols) in their hold luggage. In exceptional circumstances, where liquids must be carried in hand luggage, they must be in containers not greater than 100ml capacity and be placed in one transparent re-sealable plastic bag, no larger than 20cm x 20cm.

Details of these restrictions are available on the airport website: www.cityofderryairport.com

“While delays will occur, we would like to remind passengers that delays are avoidable if passengers would follow the guidelines provided. The airport is exceptionally busy at this time of year with an anticipated 21,000 passengers expected to use the facility in the weeks around Christmas and the New Year period. We want all of our passengers to have a hassle free experience when travelling through the facility and to assist us achieve this we need passengers to co-operate fully,” he added.
