City prepares for The Big Christmas Lights Switch On

13th November 2003

With only 6 weeks to go until Christmas Day the city is preparing itself for the Big Christmas Lights Switch on which will take place next week, Wednesday 19th November at Guildhall Square.

The festivities begin at 6:30pm and the VIP guest on the night will be Santa Claus who’s visiting from Lapland to switch on the city lights at 7:30pm together with a very special guest and members of the local fire brigade. Entertainment will continue throughout the evening with music and fun for all the family until 9:00pm.

Special guests this year will be five-piece live band ‘The Miracles’, who make a welcomed return from last years Christmas lights switch on. Hailing from County Tyrone, the Miracles are a five piece band which include Kevin Hurson on vocals and guitar, band leader Aidan Quinn (son of the Queen of country – Philomena Begley) is on vocals and drums, Ronan Kane on bass guitar, Rory Madden on keyboards and Oliver Conlon on tin whistle and saxophone with Emmet Kane taking care of the sounds and visuals.

The Mayor, Councillor Shaun Gallagher, said that this was a great family event for everyone to enjoy and to start getting into the Christmas spirit, adding,

“I would like to encourage everyone to come out and join in the festive fun. The annual switch on helps create a Christmas atmosphere in the city and it’s an event not to be missed.”

This free family event is brought to you with Seasons Greetings from Derry City Council in association with the Department for Social Development.
