Connect 2 Funding A Great Boost For Derry

Wednesday 12 December 2007

The Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompson has welcomed the news that Sustrans Connect 2 bid has been successful in the People’s Millions.

He acknowledged the support of the public and said the £1.2m funding was a tremendous boost to the city in developing plans for a beautiful new walkway for pedestrians and cyclists along the East Bank of the River.

“This is hugely beneficial for the city and a significant investment for the development of leisure and river facilities. This campaign has received tremendous support from the local community and I would like to thank everyone who voted for Sustrans Connect 2 for their assistance in making this a reality.”

John Kelpie, the City Engineer with Derry City Council also welcomed the announcement. He commented: “The people of this city have got behind this campaign because they recognise the need for the river and waterfront to be made more accessible and the importance of securing investment to best utilize this natural asset. The daily use of the river walkway on the Westbank of the city by every generation in the city has further highlighted to the public the need for a similar pathway to be made on the Eastbank of the river. Well done to everyone involved.”

Bill Kirk, Chief Executive with Ilex said he was delighted at the success of the Sustrans Connect 2 bid. “This is a tremendous achievement and an excellent boost for the people of the city. This funding will help us to improve community and leisure connectivity across the city. The connectivity to the proposed foot and cycle bridge across the River Foyle will also open new ways to access the city centre from Ebrington and St Columb’s Park. We are hopeful that we can open up lands alongside the river and create a safer and healthier route for our everyday journeys to school, work and family. We would like to thank everyone who got behind the campaign and took time to vote for this very worthwhile project,” he added.
