Press ReleaseWalled City Christmas Market Promises to be a Festive TreatMonday, 12 December 2005Local organic and speciality food producers will join those from further afield for the Walled City Market in Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place on Saturday, December 17th. The aim is to promote top quality produce and stallholders will be selling everything from the ingredients for a fresh organic dinner to last minute luxury gifts. Speaking ahead of the Walled City Christmas Market, Derry City Council’s Enterprise Development Officer, Elaine Godfrey, said, “The Walled City Market in Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place will add something different to the festive shopping experience. Combined with the excellent shops in this part of the City, stallholders will offer organic and speciality foods such as vegetables, poultry and meats, fish, cheeses, and traditional breads and cakes, as well as a selection of Christmas variety goods”. This is one of a series of similar markets supported by Council’s Economic Development Programme and DETI’s EU Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme. Events such as these profile Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place as part of a premier retail destination and will provide an opportunity for shoppers to explore other parts of the Walled City that are home to speciality retailers. Welcoming the marketing Stephen Kelly, Chief Executive of the City Centre Initiative welcoming the market, commented “The Walled City Market will add colour, flavour and spectacle to the pedestrian zone. It is hoped that the Walled City Market will drive additional visitors and shoppers into the area. There is evidence to suggest that Christmas Markets across these islands have been very successful in attracting new customers, so we hope this seasonal market will benefit both existing and new retailers in showcasing their produce”.
