Public urged to recycle this Christmas

Tuesday, 14 December 2004

Householders in the Derry City Council area are being encouraged to make recycling their number one priority this Christmas season.

Speaking ahead of the Christmas period, the Chairman of Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Gerard Diver urged the public to make a concerted effort to become more environmentally friendly this Christmas.

“The Christmas season sees a huge increase in household waste each year, however Derry City Council’s Christmas tree disposal service and the new Blue Bin initiative will help make recycling easier than ever. I would ask everyone to keep thinking positively about recycling and to keep using the vital public services that are being provided,” he said.

The Council’s Blue Bin initiative is expected to help to maximise the potential for recycling the city’s Christmas waste.

The initiative, which is available to 90% of all homes across the City Council area, provides house-owners with the opportunity to recycle their household waste including newspapers, cardboard, plastic bottles, tin and aluminium cans. Those not yet part of the Blue Bin initiative are being encouraged to utilize the city’s many recycling points in an effort to reduce the amount of excess waste that is accumulated around the Christmas period.

Opening times at the Council’s five Amenity Recycling Centres have recently been extended and this is also expected to assist the public greatly in the run up to the festive season. The centres located at Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Brandywell Show Grounds, Glendermott Road, Eglinton and Claudy are now open to the public from 8.30 a.m. through to 5.00 p.m. inclusive Monday to Saturday.

For the past number of years Council has also provided a service for the disposal and recycling of Christmas trees following the festive season. Christmas Trees can be deposited at any of the city’s amenity recycling centres where they are shredded and used as compost around the city’s parks.

The following recycling amenity centres will be accepting Christmas Trees for recycling following the Christmas period - Brandywell Showgrounds on the Lone Moore Road, Waterside Sub-Depot on Glendermott Road, Council Main Depot at the Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Benbow Industrial Estate in Eglinton and Learmount Road, Claudy.

Anyone with questions regarding Recycling should contact the Helpline on (028) 7136 8550 where staff are on hand to provide assistance and answer any queries.
