Press ReleaseMayor praises community response to Rath Mor fireMonday, 11 December 2006The Mayor, Councillor Helen Quigley has praised the community in Creggan for the way in which they responded to a fire that broke out in the Rath Mor Centre at the weekend. Members of the local community and local businesses came out to help and support those affected by the fire, which took place at the Costcutters store and loading bay, on Saturday morning. The Mayor, who visited the scene of the fire yesterday, said she was overwhelmed at the way people had come along to offer their assistance. “The utility services supervisor, Declan Ferry’s prompt actions must be noted as well as the Rath Mor staff who worked through the night along with members of the local community in the clean up operation. I was particularly amazed at the amount of young people who volunteered their time to clear the rubble to ensure the centre was up and running again today. Staff at the local cafe also played an important role in supplying the volunteers and staff with hot meals and drinks. “The Rath Mor Centre is an integral part of the Creggan community and this is evident in the way the local people came out to help at the weekend. I am delighted to hear that the centre is open for business today and I would urge the local community to continue to support local enterprise in the run up to Christmas.” Conal McFeeley of Creggan Enterprises, reiterating the Mayors comments, acknowledged the support received at the weekend. He paid tribute to everyone who gave up their time to help saying that without their quick response and help, up to 100 jobs could have been in jeopardy. A special note of thanks was extended to three local young people, Ciaran McIntyre, Tom Casey and Daniel O’Connell, who were particularly helpful in the clean up. “The actions of these young people must be acknowledged, as well as those of all the businesses, local families and community members who helped on the day. Without your assistance we would not be up and running today,” he commented. ***Ends*** Press OfficeTel: 028 71 376504Fax: 028 71 264858 Julie Flannigan Email: Julie.Flannigan@derrycity.gov.uk Claire Lundy Email: Claire.Lundy@derrycity.gov.uk |
