Mayor overwhelmed by messages of support

11 November 03

Mayor, Cllr Shaun Gallagher has been overwhelmed by the messages of support that he and his family have received from the people of the city and beyond. He said,

“I am certain that those who planted the devise at my home reflect an isolated view within our community. This is clear from the overwhelming messages of support that I have received from the city and beyond. I thank everyone for their thoughts at this time.”

The Mayor was speaking after a meeting with PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Peter Sheridan, Divisional Commander Rickey Russell and leader of Derry City Council’s SDLP Group, Cllr Pat Ramsey. Mayor, Cllr Shaun Gallagher continued,

“I would appeal to dissidents on both sides to disband and to join the democratic
forum. This is in keeping with the clearly expressed wish of the people of Ireland who have voted overwhelmingly for peace under the Good Friday Agreement. It is inexcusable that these people would attack me for commemorating the millions of people who died in two world wars, many of whom were Irish. To me it was an attack on all the citizens of our city and I will not be deterred from my responsibilities to represent all traditions within our community.

“ The Police Service have today assured me they will work rigorously to apprehend
the people involved in this cowardly act”.
