Press ReleaseGuitar Legend set for Derry Jazz FestivalWednesday, 11th April 2007One of Europe’s finest Jazz Guitarists will be jetting into Derry for the 6th City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival. The legendary Louis Stewart, who began his musical playing career as a member of the Dublin Jazz scene, will be at the City Hotel on Queens Quay on Sunday 6th May at 3pm. Having played everywhere from the Montreux Jazz Festival to cutting records on the London Jazz scene with the likes of Sam Jones and Billy Higgins, Louis has the utmost respect of his peers and jazz lovers around the world. Welcoming Louis Stewart to the Jazz Festival, Johnny Murray from the Jazz Festival said: “In a career spanning over 40 years Louis has played with some of the jazz world’s leading lights and his skill and style is much admired. “As one of the finest guitarists in the history of jazz, I know his audience are in for a treat when they hear him play and anyone with a real love of jazz will know he’s well worth hearing!” Louis will be joined at the City Hotel by a several top musicians with Damian Evans (bass) Jim Whiteside (drums) Paul McIntyre (piano) Gay McIntyre (sax) and Guest Vocalist Zoe Gilby (England). Louis Stewart has built up a strong following both in the UK and USA, playing and recording with greats including Ronnie Scott, Don Burrows, Dizzie Gillespie and George Shearing. An award winning composer, he has written a number of pieces based on the works of James Joyce, several of which appeared on the albums Milesian Source and Joycenotes. A brilliant sound allied to a crystal-clear tone has helped to make Stewart one of the outstanding guitarists in history of jazz. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Trinity College Dublin in 1998.
