Press ReleaseMuseum’s service set to host events to generate Archive Awareness10th October 2005As part of the ongoing national Archive Awareness Campaign Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service has programmed a number of events at their Museums to help encourage members of the public to learn more about their City and it’s history. On Wednesday 12th October, the Workhouse Museum will host a range of educational activities between 1 - 2pm. The Museum in a Box experience offers participants with the opportunity to examine objects and archives from the Victorian period. A number of Living History characters from the Workhouse will also be on hand to help visitors develop a greater understanding of what it was like to live in that era. The Workhouse Museum will also host a special evening lecture, ‘The Workhouse Records’ on Thursday, 13th October at 7.30pm. This lecture will be delivered by Irene 0‘Brien from the Mitchell Library, Scotland and refreshments will also be available. Everyone is welcome. Speaking ahead of the week’s activities, Bernadette Walsh, Archivist with Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum service said that the Archive Awareness Campaign offers everyone the chance to learn a little more about what has helped shape where they live today. “As part of the Archive Awareness Campaign we are encouraging everyone to get involved in creating a little history for people to enjoy in years to come. This Thursday people can drop in to see me at the Harbour Museum if they have any items which may be of interest to the archive service or indeed simply have some questions with regards to what the archive service does.” For further information please contact the Archivist at the Harbour Museum, Harbour Square Derry BT48 6AF on (028) 7137 7331.
