Press ReleaseMayor calls for unity for Day of ReflectionThursday, 09 December 2004The Mayor, Cllr Gearoíd ÓhEára has called for every member of the community to come along to Guildhall Square at 1.00 pm on Friday 10 December and take part in the city’s Civic Remembrance event – A Day of Reflection. The Mayor has spearheaded the event in an effort to overcome the potentially contentious issue of remembrance. He believes that Friday’s event offers every member of the community the opportunity to remember “all those who have lost their lives as a result of war and conflict from and within the city and district” regardless of their religious, social or political background. “As Mayor, Friday’s event is particularly important to me and I would encourage as many people as possible to take time out and come along to the Guildhall Square and participate in this unique remembrance event. I am very conscious of the importance of remembrance to the people of this city and would like to point out that this event is not intended to replace any of the existing commemorations that take place. Friday’s event provides everyone with the opportunity to come together and remember their loved ones and to take time to think of all the people who have lost their lives as a result of war and conflict. “There will be no speeches, statements or opinions offered at the event. It is solely an event for every member of the community to appreciate the fact that everyone who has died as a result of conflict or war was someone’s loved one, and each of those persons had a connections with this city and district. I look forward to seeing as many people as possible coming along on Friday and taking part in this unique and worthwhile event,” he concluded. The Day of Reflection will commence at 1.00 pm at Guildhall Square on Friday and will last for approximately 30 minutes. It will consist of a number of readings, musical performances by the Codetta choir and the unveiling of a civic plaque of dedication.
