Statement From Mayor

The Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompson has condemned those responsible for the shooting of an off duty police officer in the city this morning.

The off-duty police officer was shot close to the Lumen Christi College in Bishop Street at approximately 8.30 am. Its understood his injuries are not life threatening.

The Mayor condemning the incident said he was deeply shocked that such an attack would happen so close to a school.

He commented: “This is a shocking and cowardly act and one which must be condemned outright. There is no place for these type of acts in society but unfortunately there are people who do not want to move towards a better and peaceful place for the entire community. Thankfully this police officer was not seriously hurt and my thoughts are with him and his family at this time.”
