Press ReleaseSharing Good Practice - Race, Equality and Diversity Conference8th November 2005‘Race, Equality and Diversity’ are to be the focus of a North West regional conference in January, which is being co-organised by Derry City Council and five other local district Councils. The conference, organised by the Northern Forum of Community Relations Officers, is entitled ‘Sharing Good Practice - Race, Equality and Diversity’ and will be held at the Royal Court Hotel in Portrush on Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th January 2006. Each day of the conference has a distinct theme and target audience. The first day will focus on developing the capacity of the business and statutory sectors to work within a diverse society; whilst the second day will have the theme of developing the capacity of the community, voluntary and education sectors to engage with a diverse society. Sue Divin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council explained that the conference will feature a number of workshops on each day together with a range of speakers commenting, “This free conference is set to address such topics as the Business case for diversity, Education for Diversity, Service Provision Challenges, Diversity in our local community, Civic leadership, Migrant workers and Community safety over the two day programme.” “It will also feature representatives from Bradford Metropolitan Council alongside local ethnic minority groups who will be exploring models of Good Practice and outlining the current needs and concerns of ethnic minority groups. “The conference is open to the statutory, business, education, community and voluntary sectors. Derry City Council has allocated 30 places, which can be availed of on each day of the conference. We are expecting demand to be high so anybody interested in attending should reserve their space as soon as possible.” Advance booking is essential and the places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The conference is funded through the District Council’s Community Relations Programme, and also has the support of NICEM (Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities), CRU (Community Relations Unit) and CRC (Community Relations Council).
