Press ReleaseMayor to host reception for the Polish CommunityMonday 8th NovemberMayor Councilor Gearóid Ó hEara will host a reception in the Guildhall this evening, Monday 8th November to acknowledge the contribution made by the City’s Polish Community and to formally welcome representatives from the Polish Welfare Association. Over the past 18 months the City has seen the arrival of a number of migrant workers from Poland, which recently became a EU member state in the recent EU enlargement. Speaking in advance of tonight’s reception, the Mayor said, “As a regional centre, the City must recognise the need to embrace a wide range of interests and people into our community. I welcome the formation of the Polish Welfare Association and feel this is a positive initiative, which will be instrumental in helping the Polish community integrate further within the City. Tonight is an opportunity to reiterate our support from the City and to officially welcome the Polish community through acknowledging their culture and activity as positive contributors to our society.” Speaking ahead of the reception Derry City Council's Community Relations Officer, Sue Gallagher, who has been working in conjunction with the growing Polish Community in the North West commented. “It is important that the Polish Community, predominantly migrant workers, feel happy and welcomed in our local community. The Mayor's reception is an indication of the positive contribution migrant workers are making to our local economy. Our society is becoming increasingly multi-cultural and we all have a lot to learn from the growing diversity in our communities.” ENDS For more information contact City Marketing on (028) 7137 6504 For additional information contact:Press OfficeTel: 028 71 376504Fax: 028 71 264858 Adele McCourt Email: Adele.McCourt@derrycity.gov.uk Claire Lundy Email: Claire.Lundy@derrycity.gov.uk |
