Press ReleaseGet In Step With The Mayor’s Tea Dance5th December 2006Following the success of her Afternoon Tea Dances over the last few months, the Mayor has organized a Christmas Tea Dances tomorrow, Wednesday 06th December. The event will be held in the Guildhall with music, dance and refreshments between 2 and 4pm. The afternoon entertainment and refreshments are free - to ensure Derry’s older people enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Mayor, Councillor Helen Quigley said she was delighted at the success of the tea dances, said: “Our older people have not only helped shape this city but they’ve helped make us what we are and we can’t forget that. They are an incredibly important part of the community and it’s important that we celebrate the contribution they make to modern society. With age comes wisdom and we must remember how they’ve made their mark on our city. Our pensioners have a lot to give and we can learn from them and their experiences. I’d like to thank Age Concern for all their help in organizing this event. The staff have been invaluable in making sure the previous Afternoon Tea Dances were a success.” The Afternoon Tea Dances are part of the Mayor’s initiative to reach out to all groups in the community. They’ve been organised to give older peoples a chance to enjoy the songs and dance of yesteryear, to share memories and have a bit of craic. Adding her support to the Mayors Initiative, Eilish O’Doherty from Age Concern said: “I know how much our older people have enjoyed previous tea dances here and I’m sure coming up to Christmas, they’ll be extra special. It’s important at this time of year that our older people feel appreciated and involved. Many feel lonely and that feeling often increases at Christmas so these Tea Dances are a great opportunity for our older people to get out and have a great time. I would also like to ask everyone to keep an eye on their elderly friends and relatives at this time of year and ensure that they don’t feel neglected or overlooked.” Ends For more information, please contact the Marketing and Communications Department on: 02871376504 For additional information contact:Press OfficeTel: 028 71 376504Fax: 028 71 264858 Adele McCourt Email: Adele.McCourt@derrycity.gov.uk Claire Lundy Email: Claire.Lundy@derrycity.gov.uk |
