Press ReleaseThursday 5th JuneMayor Cllr Gerard Diver Will attend the annual Colmcille Lecture Annual Colmcille lecture at Tower MuseumDerry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service will host the Annual Colmcille Lecture on 9 June 2008 at 7pm at the Tower Museum. Mayor Cllr Gerard Diver said he was delighted to support an event that promotes the city’s heritage and history, he continued, “ It’s vital that we develop a strong infrastructure that promotes our cultural offer and the annual Colmcille lecture provides locals and visitors alike with a wonderful opportunity to learn about one of the city’s most famous figures. ” The speaker at this year’s event is Dr. Brian Lacey, former Head of the Heritage and Museum Service of Derry City Council and current CEO of the Discovery Programme. The lecture is titled ‘Medieval Columban Pilgrimages in Donegal and Derry’. The lecture will look at specific pilgrimage routes in Glencolumbkille, Gartan and Derry. Bernadette Walsh, Archivist with the Heritage and Museum Service said, “The Annual Colmcille Lecture has been running for a considerable number of years, with a vast array of speakers, the interest it generates each year is considerable. A lot of research work has been carried out by Dr Lacey on the subject of Columcille and it seemed an appropriate time to invite him back to the City.” The lecture will take place at the Tower Museum at 7.00pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome, refreshments will be served following the lecture.
