Press ReleaseInternational Quilt exhibition opens at Tower MuseumTuesday 4th MarchA poignant exhibition featuring quilts made by women from across the world will open at The Verbal Arts Centre on March 8th, International Women's Day. In addition to the international exhibition, a selection of Irish quilts, many of which were created locally, will simultaneously be on display in various cultural venues across the city. The exhibition, entitled 'The Art of Survival', will feature a range of quilts handcrafted by women from various countries across the world including Germany, Palestine, Zimbabwe and Croatia. The quilts depict the live experiences of women from a wide variety of cultures and life situations. Mayor Alderman Drew Thompson said he was honoured to open such a creative and international exhibition and was sure that it would be of great interest locally, especially given the city's textile history. He continued " These quilts are a wonderful expression of so many life experiences, they convey stories of conflict, struggle and survival. It is very appropriate that the exhibition has opened on International Women's Day, the creativity expressed in these quilts is testimony to the determination of women across the world. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique opportunity to see an international exhibition created by women across the globe. " This exhibition will be on display at the Tower Museum 8th March - 19th April 2008 and is the result of a joint collaboration between the Heritage and Museum Service of Derry City Council and The Junction, with Guest Curator Roberta Bacic. Partner institutions displaying Irish quilts are the Harbour Museum, Workhouse Museum, Verbal Arts Centre, The Void Gallery, The Playhouse, The Diocesan and the Museum of Free Derry.
