Coshowen recognised with special Pride of Place award

3rd November 2005

The Coshowen community has received a Special Award for Community Empowerment in an all Ireland competition. The award, which recognises local people’s self-help efforts to improve their environment, was presented at the Co-operation Ireland Pride of Place gala ceremony in Belfast’s City Hall last week.

Congratulating the people of Coshowen, the Mayor, Councillor Lynn Fleming, said

“The Pride of Place competition recognises local communities’ hard work and effort to improve their area. The Coshowen estate has given a great example of what a community can do when it brings everyone together to make a positive environmental and aesthetic impact to its surroundings.”

The Pride of Place competition is a 32 county community based contest organised in association with Co-operation Ireland. The City’s entry was compiled by Derry City Council with the help of the Coshowen Residents Association, Bogside and Brandywell Initiative, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the Department of Social Development and Groundwork Northern Ireland.

The entry was part of the ongoing Pride in our City campaign and the campaign’s coordinator, Danny McCartney, Grounds Maintenance Manager with Derry City Council, has welcomed this latest success.

“ I am thrilled for the people of Coshowen that their efforts have been recognised through the Pride of Place accolade. This has been an outstanding year for the Pride in our City campaign, which over the past two months has seen the City win the City Category in the Britain in Bloom and the Ulster in Bloom competitions”, he added, “ as well as Jeanette Warke receiving an outstanding contribution award.”

“Plans are already being put in place for next year’s campaign and it’s hoped that we can build on the success of this years initiative,” he concluded.

Any local community groups who are considering contributing to next year’s entries should contact Mr. McCartney through the Council offices, telephone (028) 7136 5151.
