Press Release
Derry City Shadow Council Citizens Forum
Are sectarian attacks on young people on the increase?
2nd December 2005
Members of Derry City Shadow Council are holding a Citizens Forum
in St Columb’s Park House on Tuesday 6th December at 7.00pm.
The forum will debate – Are sectarian attacks on young people
on the increase in our City?
Charlotte Cox from St Columb’s Park House will be giving a presentation
about research recently launched in the City that was a study of Population
Change and Social Inclusion. A representative from the PSNI, and a
local young person will also give a presentation at the event. Sue
Divin, Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council, will chair
the meeting along with a member of the Shadow Council.
The Mayor, Councillor Lynn Fleming, encouraging members of the public
to come along to the event, said it was a good opportunity to debate
a very important and topical subject.
“I think it is important that we encourage young people to talk
about their experiences and their opinions. Debates such as these are
extremely beneficial and I believe they go someway towards creating
more awareness of the problem and in turn help us identify how we can
help reduce the number of attacks in our city,” she said.
Shadow Council Chairperson Christina Campbell speaking ahead of the
event said:
"
I think any sort of attacks on other people are deplorable and sectarian
attacks are among the worst. To try and stop the rise in these attacks
we need
to listen to what people have to say in order to know what is the
best
action to take.”
Members of the public are invited to come along
