Press ReleaseCivic Leaders welcome Taoiseach to the CityFriday November 2nd 2007An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was welcomed to the City by Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompon who, along with members of the Civic Regeneration Forum and civic leaders, met in the Guildhall today. Speaking after the visit, the Mayor said: "It was particular fitting that, in the setting of the Guildhall, the Taoiseach acknowledged the work of local elected representatives and recognised their contribution and commitment to the city".
During his visit the Taoiseach also acknowledged the importance of strong cross border working and focused upon the potential for increasing tourism, enhancing healthcare provision and investing in infrastructure. He also acknowledged the importance of City of Derry Airport as a key infrastructural asset for the North West. The Mayor concluded: "Today was an opportunity to build upon cross border connections and to focus upon the opportunities for developing the City and the Region". The Taoiseach arrived earlier today at the City of Derry Airport as the Capital Safety Works project, funded by both the Irish and UK Government, are underway. During this visit he also viewed the newly refurbished Story of Derry exhibition at the Tower Museum which was officially opened earlier this year.
