Press Release
Insertion of Time Capsule to the Siege Heroes Mound
Within the grounds of St. Columb’s Cathedral
02 November 2006
To coincide with the ongoing restoration of the Siege Heroes Mound
within the grounds of St.Columb's Cathedral, the Apprentice Boys of
Derry will insert a time capsule within the newly installed stonework
which will be fixed in place on Friday 3rd November.
The time capsule will hold a collection of items relating to the year
2006, some of which are of significance to the Apprentice Boys of Derry
including a DVD of their 2006 annual parade, a copy of a local newspaper
which covered their 2006 parade and a CD of a band which leads their
annual parade. The Apprentice Boys of Derry hope that the time capsule
and its contents will help to symbolize what has taken place within
the organization during this current year.
The mound itself lies within the grounds of the historic St.Columb's
Cathedral and is highly visible from both the City Walls and the
main approach to the Cathedral via London Street.
Works to the mound are currently ongoing and incorporate the restoration
of the metal work railings, the conservation and restoration of
the monument itself, installation of new high quality granite stonework,
and associated hard and soft landscaping works to include new planting
and a wider access way to the mound itself.
The works are being funded through Derry City Council’s Economic
Development Action Plan are being project managed by the Council’s
City Engineers Department.
The restoration of the Siege Heroes Mound forms part of a number of
tourism infrastructure projects initiated as part of the Council's
Local Economic Development Plan and which also includes the restoration
of the Bogside Murals and also the conservation of the City's cannon
guns.
