Mayor pledges support for Foyle Cup

Wednesday, 02 July 2008

The Mayor, Councillor Gerard Diver attended the official launch today of the 2008 University of Ulster Foyle Cup which is scheduled to take place in the city on July 22nd - 26th. The competition features clubs from four continents and provides competitive tournament football for children and youths aged 10-18.

In 2008, a grand total of 118 teams are expected to take to the field - making this the largest ever. Welcoming the tournament, the Mayor said he was very supportive of the competition and paid tribute to everyone involved in organising the event.

He commented: “The Foyle Cup provides an incredible platform for the city to showcase the range of facilities we have to offer and our ability to organise international sporting events. The event goes from strength to strength each year and continues to make a significant impact on our economy with hotels and other accommodation facilities being filled to capacity over the duration of the competition. We as a city are very proud of how this competition has developed since its inception. The manner in which it has grown to become one of the country’s leading youth soccer championships can only be admired and special tribute must be paid to Michael Hutton and his team for their tremendous work and commitment to this event.

“The tournament is a very special event, not only because it brings huge numbers of participants and their supporters to our city but it provides young people with a unique opportunity to represent their community and make new and lasting friendships as well as enjoy first class soccer. On behalf of Derry City Council I am delighted to be at the launch and look forward to the competition later this month. The Council is supportive of any event that encourages young people to get involved in sport,” he added.
