The City of Culture was the scene of much celebration last night as receptionists from throughout Northern Ireland gathered for this year’s Hotel Receptionist of the year gala award ceremony. The competition organised by the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation is in its tenth year and has gone from strength to strength since its inception. The 2013 competition had an extra dimension with a special category for Derry-Londonderry hotels in the form of a culture champion award supported by Derry City Council.
James McGinn, President of the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation said “This competition has attracted numerous winners from the maiden city over the years and it is only fitting that it is part of the city’s cultural celebration. The NIHF is delighted to see the role of the hotel receptionist recognised with this special award as part of the city of culture. As an industry, we look forward to contributing to the success of the year and continuing to promote the important role of the hotel sector .”
The winner of the title of Culture Champion was Best Western White Horse Hotel who were recognised for their commitment through a significant investment programme as well as an informed understanding of the opportunities within the culture programme. Staff involvement and training were also acknowledged as a fundamental element of their champion worthy entry.
The Mayor of Derry, Cllr Kevin Campbell of Derry City Council stated that he was “pleased to be associated with the prestigious awards and particularly delighted that the Northern Ireland Hotel Federation have chosen to stage the event in Derry as part of the City of Culture celebrations. Our sponsorship of these awards is not only a recognition of the important role of the hotel industry and its contribution to the City’s tourism product offering and local economy, but also to acknowledge the key ambassadorial role of hotel receptionists. It was great to be part of such a successful event and I look forward to working with the hotel federation in the development of future initiatives that help promote the importance of this sector and its impact to the local economy”.
UTV’s Marc Mallet compered proceedings at the awards dinner, which was held in the City Hotel, Derry on Wednesday 10th April 2013. Culture Champion Sponsors, Derry City Council joined with category supporters Northern Ireland Tourist Board and Avvio in an evening celebrating the excellence of Northern Ireland’s reception staff.
