Introduction

LDWLocal Democracy Week 2011 takes place from 10th – 16th October 2011.  It is an excellent opportunity for Derry City Council and its Elected Members to focus on young people and engage them in their work.  The Local Democracy Campaign is attempting to give young people a better understanding of how local democracy works and what their role in the local community is.

Derry City Council’s aim for Local Democracy Week is to:
  • Encourage young people to voice their opinions on issues that matter most to them;
  • Raise the profile of local democracy and the role of the Mayor and Councillors;
  • Encourage more Councillors to get involved in youth participation and to support the young people of the area;
  • Raise awareness on elections and how to vote.

Derry City Council will host a series of activities during Local Democracy Week as an exercise in bringing politicians and young people closer together.  Activities will include:
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Mayor for the Day
  • Portrait of A Mayor
  • Word Search
  • Quiz on our City Crest
  • Debate and Voting
  • Council for Councils Conference
  • Youth Question and Answer Session

Primary School Activities will take place Monday 10th & Thursday 13th October
Post Primary School Activities will take place Tuesday 11th & Wednesday 12th October
