European Information.European NewsEuropean Year of Education Through Sport.The European Year of Education through Sport (EYES) sees its official launch in Dublin on 29-30 January 2004. This EU initiative aims to forge links between the worlds of sport and education. The official launch of the year will also be one of the major events at the start of the Irish EU Presidency .The slogan for the year is 'Move your body, stretch your mind' and will be included in events such as the Euro 2004 football championship taking place in Portugal and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Athens, as well as in around another 200 events organised for the year. The call for proposals to hold events was launched in May (see EIS 239 p54-55) and the last phase of the call will close on 1 May 2004, for projects planned to take place after July 2004. Around 12 million will be available for sports projects in the Member States. IN Northern Ireland will be open for applications again in 2004. Approximately £4
million will be available to support projects on two themes : Economic Development Conference.Derry City Council will be hosting a conference of local Government Economic Development Officers to discuss the role of local development in a future regional policy for Northern Ireland. This conference will contribute towards the overall planning process for local Government beyond the end of the current EU funding programmes in Northern Ireland. Amongst the speakers at the conference will be an official from the European Commision Directorate General for Regional policy who will give an insight into proposals by the European Commision on possible future support for the regions post 2006. For Further details contact terence.okane@derrycity.gov.uk Funding Workshop for IT ProjectsWith over EURO 2 billion remaining in the pot to fund information technology projects under the sixth research and development framework programme, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is organising two one day events to help UK based organisations apply for funding. FP6UK, the DTI support mechanism for organisations hoping to submit proposals to the framework programme, hosting the two events on 9-10 February 2004. These events will focus on the software and services required for so called ‘ambient intelligence’, the industry buzz word for software and service development and their application. Both days will have different themes and delegates may attend on both days or on a single day of their choosing. Speakers will include representatives of the Commission who will discuss
the type of projects that have already received some level of European
support. Industry and academic speakers will also outline their visions
of the future and the kind of research requirements that they anticipate. |
