Introduction.

Derry City Council currently has a number of established relationships with European partners in the public and private sector. These relationships have an important role in helping to deliver the aims of the councils Corporate plan in general and its Economic Development Strategy in relation to :

• Inward Investment
• Small Business Development
• Tourism

Example European Projects

Derry City Council and Donegal County Council established ERNACT EEIG (European Economic Interest Grouping) in 1990 as a joint crossborder subsidiary of both local authorities. Its objectives were to enable both council areas to
co-operate on the theme of communications technology and the emerging information society.

Local councils, strategic partnerships and leader + groups have collaborated in establishing the North West European network; A project funded through EU structural funds PEACE II Measure 4.1 “Forward looking Region”. This Project will support networks within the Northwest region and will develop linkages between the Northwest and other regions within Europe. The Nerve Centre in Derry has received funding under PEACE (II) Measure 2.3 “Promoting a labour Market open to all”. The Creative industries training programme will provide full and part time accredited training opportunities in multimedia, sound recording, media techniques and Music Business & Technology. There are 50 full time places for year long training and 60 part time places each year. The part time courses ( 3 times per year for 20 people - with 1 for women only ) will be structured to increase particpation by marginalised groups including women within the creative industries and to direct these groups into the full time courses. Networking in Europe and Beyond.

To support its European projects Derry City Council has appointed a European officer to work with the other district Councils within the North West region in developing the networks within the region and with European partners in other EU regions.
