Food Delivery Vehicles

It is not just premises that need to keep to the hygiene rules delivery vehicles are also checked. Food vehicles can be inspected whenever they are in use and at their base.
You are required by law to register premises used for food businesses, and this includes delivery vehicles. Registration allows local authorities to keep an up to date list so they can carry out checks when they need to.
Vehicles and/or containers used to transport food must be kept clean and maintained in good repair and condition, to protect foods from contamination. Where necessary they must be designed and constructed to allow adequate cleaning and/or disinfection.
Items used to hold food (for example boxes) in vehicles and/or containers must not be used for transporting anything other than foods where this may cause contamination.
Where vehicles and/or containers are used for transporting anything other than foods, or for transporting different foods at the same time, you must separate the products effectively where necessary.
Foods transported in bulk as liquids, granules or powder must be transported in items used only to hold foods and/or containers/tankers used only for transporting foods. These containers must be marked in a way that is clearly visible and “indelible” (cannot be rubbed out/removed), in one or more European Community Language (including English), to show that they are used for transporting foods, or be marked “for foodstuffs only’.
Where vehicles and/or containers have been used for transporting anything other than foods or for transporting different foods, you must clean effectively between loads to avoid risk of contamination.
Foods in vehicles and/or containers must be placed and protected in a way that minimised risk of contamination.
Where necessary, vehicles and/or containers used for transporting foods must be capable of keeping foods at appropriate temperatures and allow those temperatures to be monitored.
Any vehicles associated with premises for the delivery of food would be inspected as part of the food premises. Environmental Health Officers will ensure that vehicles are kept clean and in good repair and that food can be transported at the correct temperature and cannot be contaminated in any way.
The Environmental Health Department inspects vehicles as part of routine food hygiene inspections.
