To protect public health and safeguard the environment by the elimination of public health nuisances, minimization of pollution and promotion of responsible dog ownership.
To undertake effective pollution control by monitoring and taking appropriate statutory action. To ensure as far as reasonably practicable that all consumer products supplied in the Council district are safe.
To protect the public against the spread of food-borne diseases and to ensure the safety and wholesomeness of food manufactured or sold within the district.
To ensure that risks to peoples health and safety from work activities are properly controlled.

There are a wide variety of factors that influence health. These include age, sex and individual lifestyle choices together with broader, underlying social, economic and environmental factors. The traditional environmental health function focuses on addressing the environmental determinants of health. Each of the environmental health department’s sections works to protect and promote health, primarily through interventions designed to secure compliance with minimum legal standards.
