Community Relations

Derry City Council employs two community relations officers based within its Community Services Section in the Development Department.  The CRO’s area of work is defined more fully in Derry City Council’s Good Relations Strategy which is available electronically on www.derrycity.gov.uk/goodrelations  

Community Relations work is specific to challenging sectarian and racial prejudice; the promotion of cultural diversity; awareness of and acceptance of diverse traditions and the promotion of good relations as defined by Section 75(2) in the NI Act 1998.
In brief summary the CRO’s work relates to:

  • Implementation of DCC’s Good Relations Strategy.
  • Grant Aid (SLA’s, Main and Support Grants) related to the Community Relations Programme Criteria.
  • Work with Ethnic Minorities and Migrant Workers.
  • Provision of training courses for Community and Voluntary sector and internal staff relevant to Good Relations.
  • Work with other council areas on Good Relations.
  • Point of contact for Community and Voluntary Sector on Good Relations / Community Relations.
  • Interfaces.
  • Work on Flags, emblems, re-imaging communities etc.
  • Community Relations Week (annual event)
  • Prejudice Face On programme in local post-primary schools.
  • Initiatives in partnership with the Shared City Project and sometimes with organisations from the Community and Voluntary Sector.
  • Co-ordination of the Good Relations Focus Group.
