Derry District Policing Partnership Chair, Councillor Thomas Conway is asking drivers to be more responsible in relation to road safety. Speaking on the issue Cllr Conway said:“Firstly I would like to congratulate the PSNI and their partners in achieving a massive reduction in those killed or seriously injured on our roads. Figures released for the first nine months of this year (April to December 2011) show that 11 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads when compared to 26 people for the same period last year. This represents a 58% reduction. However, I am still concerned that some drivers are continuing to act irresponsibly with 437 people detected driving with no insurance, 148 drivers detected using a mobile phone when driving and 171 people detected drink/drug driving over the nine month period.”

Following the meeting with specialist engineer contractors earlier today, Derry City Council can confirm that the contractor has commenced to put in place emergency stabilisation works to the retaining wall behind Marlborough Terrace. A spokesperson explained: “Following the site visit earlier today, the contractor is undertaking a scheme of work to assist with commencement on site. This will concentrate on the immediate areas of risk of collapse along the retaining wall and the reconnection of waste pipes. The physical clearance of the area has commenced and the majority of priority areas will be concluded ahead of Christmas. This should provide reassurance to residents in the area that the health and safety arrangements for the area are being managed. Derry City Council will continue to monitor the situation through this specialist contractor support”.

Speaking in advance of the holiday break Cllr Conway said “At this time of year many homes hold expensive presents and I would urge householders to ensure that their homes are secured even if they are only popping out for a few minutes. I would also ask neighbours, particularly in isolated rural areas, to look out for the elderly and vulnerable and report any suspicious activity immediately to the police.”

Siun Heaney and Karlann Mc Dermott from St. Cecilia's College - Specialist School for Performing and Visual Arts in Derry, have won a London 2012 education programme design competition to create a version of the London 2012 Olympic mascot Wenlock that they feel represents Northern Ireland. Derry City Council and Strabane District Council areas have experienced significant damage to rare peatland, due to the recent arson attacks. Over 3 km² of blanket bog in Balix Hill and Owenreagh Hill (5 km north-west of Plumbridge), within the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has been severely damaged. Also, Killycor Hill (2 km east of Claudy), 500 m from the River Faughan Special Area of Conservation, has been badly burnt. These upland fires have put people’s lives, health, property and livelihoods at risk, as well as threatening livestock and local wildlife.

Due to the prolonged period, of extreme freezing weather conditions throughout Northern Ireland, Derry City Council has been advised by the DoE, that the shooting of certain wildfowl species, will be temporarily suspended for a second time, from Thursday 23rd December. This will last for 14 days, with a review after 7 days.

Derry City Council’s Waste Management team have advised that refuse collection lorries are operating as normal this morning however have stated that they are currently experiencing some difficulties in reaching smaller untreated streets and, in particular, those with steep inclines. Council have advised that they will return later in the day to affected areas to attempt collection again. They have asked members of the public living in these areas to, where possible, leave their bins at the top of their streets so that their bins can be collected.
